Distancia

In Galicia, Gestmusic undertook a unique television experience: to make a programme about Galician emigrants from the airport of Lavacolla, in Santiago de Compostela. The timing of this magazine with a certain air of a chat show was made to coincide with Christmas, a time of reunion for the emigrants with their families.

The set was assembled in the airport itself, from where the programmes were broadcast live. The aim of the programme Distancia was for the camera to witness the homecoming of emigrant Galicians, so several ENGs were called to the airport and the train and bus stations. Family members and emigrants passed through the airport set and told their stories, the reasons why they had packed their bags years before and their feelings about returning to their homeland.

There was also a live link-up each day from a different part of Galicia, with reports related to Christmas in Galicia or the news of the day.

The set, despite being small, enabled the presenter, Yolanda Vázquez, to have a conversation with a group of up to seven people. Amid the tales of arrivals and homecomings, the programme also informed viewers about a great many corners of the airport and the people who work there: from a shoe-shiner to musicians who play the guitar in passenger terminals.
